Mera Peak (6,476m) holds the distinction of being Nepal's highest permitted trekking peak. Its non-technical summit slopes and approach through the remote Hinku Valley make it an ideal objective for climbers seeking a big mountain experience without extreme technical difficulty. Our permit and basecamp package provides the logistics you need for a self-organised ascent.

Route & Difficulty. The standard route approaches through the Hinku Valley and ascends the Mera Glacier. The climbing is non-technical — steep snow slopes rather than ice — but the altitude presents the primary challenge. Your nutrition and hydration strategy becomes critical above 5,500m.

Required Experience. Basic mountaineering skills and good physical fitness. Previous high-altitude trekking experience is beneficial but not essential. This is the most accessible 6000m peak for climbers building toward Island Peak or Lobuche East.

Best Season. Spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November). The Hinku Valley approach is longer and more remote — allow 18–21 days total.

Gear Highlights. A 60–70cm ice axe, 12-point crampons, and double-layer boots rated to –30°C. Follow our comprehensive gear guide for the full equipment list.

What Makes It Special. The summit views encompass five 8000m peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Kanchenjunga — one of the most spectacular mountain panoramas on Earth.
