Island Peak (6,189m), also known by its local name Imja Tse, is the most popular 6000m peak in Nepal. Its relatively straightforward glacier ascent and stunning location in the heart of the Khumbu make it an ideal first high-altitude objective. Our permit and basecamp package gives independent climbers everything they need for a self-organised ascent.
Route & Difficulty. The standard route crosses the Imja Glacier before ascending a 60-metre headwall of 40–50 degree ice and snow. The headwall is the crux section with fixed ropes typically in place during spring. Total summit day from Base Camp: 8–12 hours round trip.
Required Experience. Basic mountaineering skills are sufficient: cramponing, ice axe arrest, and rope travel. A pre-expedition training program of at least 3 months is recommended. Many climbers use Island Peak as a stepping stone to Mera Peak or Lobuche East.
Best Season. Spring (April–May) is the primary season. Autumn (October–November) is quieter but colder. The approach through Dingboche offers excellent acclimatization progress.
Gear Highlights. The headwall makes technical ice tools and good crampons essential. See our gear guide for full specifications. A helmet is mandatory.
What Makes It Special. The summit views encompass Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and Makalu — arguably the finest panorama of any 6000m peak in Nepal.
